What is 3D Printing and Why is it Useful for Everyone?

Is 3D printing useful? Or is it just something grabs the interest of tech geeks, prototyping hobbyist, big companies, but everyday people won’t need it? Not at all!

In fact, with the continuous decrease in the price of 3D printers, more and more people are getting their hands on a 3D printer themselves (yes, not big companies, but a normal individual who sees the valuable uses of a 3D printer).

What is 3D Printing?

Before we explain how 3D printing can be useful for you, let us first look at what is 3D printing. 3D printing is a manufacturing method which converts a 3D drawing into a real model.

Simply put, 3D printing turns your 3D drawing into an actual 3D model.

There are several types of 3D printing technology which 3D prints the part in different ways. In RP Space, we specialize in Fused Deposition Modelling (FDM) 3D printing technology. The FDM 3D printing works by depositing thermoplastic layer by layer until the whole model is formed.

Now, let us get back to the question.

3D Printing for Your Daily Life

Back to the question, how 3D printing can be useful for you? It may not be too intuitive to most people and it is pretty hard to explain by words. In fact, 3D printing has been known to be used for hobby/personal projects and industrial uses such as prototyping and functional parts.

But really, no, it goes way beyond that scope. In fact, most of the parts needed in your house can be 3D printed!

Since it is pretty hard to explain the usefulness of 3D printing in your everyday life using words, we will share some examples of useful 3D prints for you, through PICTURES. Enjoy.

Cable Organizer

(Designed by PLG_Designs from Thingiverse)

Cables scattered around? No problem, just print yourself a cable organizer.

Scattered Cables

Hate long cables lying around? So do we.

(Designed by jonahl from Thingiverse)

Much better. And you can even stack them up.

(Design by magicxman from YouMagine)

Just wrap any cables you wish.

Dupont Wire Holders

(Designed by windchime from Thingiverse)

Use a lot of dupont wires? Look at how neat these wires are.

(Yeah, we don’t have enough wires to fill up the entire holder.)

USB and SD Card Holder (Holds Micro SD Card as well)

(Designed by rzonnie from Thingiverse)

Too many pendrives and SD cards? Just print a holder for them!

Phone Holder

(Designed by byctrldesign from Thingiverse)

Phone holders are really handy don’t they?

(Designed by byctrldesign from Thingiverse)

Using Nokia phones? Don’t worry, this guy handles everything.

Toothpaste Squeezer

Are you one of those who tries your best to squeeze everything out of the toothpaste?
Then, this toothpaste squeezer should do a great job for you.

(Designed by Wired1 from Thingiverse)

Of course, keychain! You can even make it a necklace!
And you can customize it however you want.
(No, I do not own a Volkswagen)
Not very useful, but it could save you some cash if you need one to make your loved ones happy.

(Design by Agustin Flowalistik from YouMagine)

Imagine being able to 3D print a ring and give it to your loved ones, your loved ones would be really happy.

You can even customize the shape, colour and size!
Got the wrong size? No problem, 3D print it again.

Toys and Miniatures

Print yourself a bunch of miniatures/toys.
For your children or relative to play with, or use them to decorate your workspace.

Grocery Bag Carrier

Too little hands for too many plastic bags? This should help.

Universal Bottle Opener (UBO)

(Designed by In3Designs from Thingiverse)

What about a universal bottle opener?

(Designed by In3Designs from Thingiverse)

Tight water bottle caps are not anymore an issue! Your grandparents would love it a lot!

(This universal bottle opener opens can drinks and beer bottles as well, we currently are not drinking any, so we do not have any example pictures.)

Chip Clip

(Designed by walter from Thingiverse)

Hey, what about a chip clip? Now you don’t have to finish your chips once it is open.

Sanding Stick (A stick for sandpaper)

(Designed by mightynozzle from Thingiverse)

Sanding stick anyone? (Sandpaper is not 3D printed)

(Designed by mightynozzle from Thingiverse)

This sanding stick reaches areas which are usually very hard to reach, awesome! (Yup, I am sanding the USB and SD card holder.)

Business Card Case

(Designed by LoboCNC from Thingiverse)

You can now give your business cards in a “professional” way, it ejects your cards one by one.

(Designed byTheGoofy from Thingiverse)

3D printed vise, everything is 3D printed!

(Designed by TheGoofy from Thingiverse)

Really handy for holding parts. (It holds tight!)

Manual Drill (Hand Driven Drill)

(Designed by LoboCNC from Thingiverse)

A cordless drill is too expensive? No worries, just print a manual drill.

Only the body of this drill is 3D printed. The drill bit, which is the part performing the actual drilling, is not 3D printed.
(Yes, you still need to buy the drill bit.)

The vise seems useful for this scenario.

Awesome, it really drills!

That is all for the examples of 3D prints we would like to share, but that is not all 3D printing can do! 3D printing can do way more than these, give it a try to explore more in order to gain the most out of 3D printing.

We may have not provided the best examples to showcase the usefulness of 3D printing, since some of the examples can be made with other manufacturing methods at a cheaper cost.

However, the flexibility of 3D printing allows you to achieve a lot more than these examples, only limited by your imagination. Most importantly, 3D printing allows you to have control over the entire process, from the design of the parts to the making of it.

In other words, with 3D printing, the parts are done by you and it is entirely within your control.

We hope we have motivated you to get involved in 3D printing. Getting a 3D printer is not the only way to get involved in 3D printing, you can start with 3D printing services to experience the power of 3D printing.

If you are interested, we are providing 3D printing service which helps you 3D print your desired 3D model. You may check our more information about our 3D printing service here.
